German Army Chief Christian Freuding will become Germany’s chief of defense in February 2027, according to a statement released Thursday by the country’s defense ministry. The appointment will make Freuding Germany’s highest ranking soldier and place him at the top of the nation’s military command.

Freuding will succeed Carsten Breuer, who has been selected as the next head of NATO’s military committee. That committee is the alliance’s top military authority and serves as a key advisory body for NATO’s political leaders.

The announcement sets out the next leadership moves for both men. Freuding is scheduled to assume Germany’s highest military position, while Breuer is set to move into the senior NATO committee role.

Freuding has served as Germany’s army chief since October 2025. His planned elevation comes after years in which he oversaw Berlin’s arms supplies to Kyiv and pressed for the implementation of new technology tested in Ukraine.

His work also included initiating a drone regiment in the German army. Those responsibilities placed arms support, emerging technology and drones among the central elements of his record before being named to the country’s top military job.

The February 2027 transition means Freuding’s tenure as army chief will precede his move to chief of defense. The defense ministry’s Thursday statement identified him as the officer chosen to follow Breuer in that post.

Breuer’s next assignment will take him to NATO’s military committee, where he was chosen to serve as its head. The source described that committee as both the alliance’s leading military authority and an important advisory body for NATO’s political leadership.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius praised Freuding’s character and service in the ministry statement. “Lieutenant General Freuding embodies camaraderie and the values of our Bundeswehr,” Pistorius said.

Pistorius also emphasized Freuding’s judgment during periods of change and pressure. “He is guided by a clear moral compass,” the minister added. “He has impressively demonstrated that, even in times of major changes and challenges, he keeps a cool head, makes the right decisions quickly, and puts them into action.”

The minister’s comments focused on camaraderie, Bundeswehr values, moral judgment, composure, decision making and execution. His remarks accompanied the announcement that Freuding will become the country’s most senior soldier in February 2027.

Freuding’s experience overseeing Berlin’s arms supplies to Kyiv formed a significant part of the record cited in the report. He also advocated bringing new technology tested in Ukraine into use and moved to establish a drone regiment within the German army.

The succession brings together two senior appointments involving Germany and NATO. Freuding is slated to take Germany’s chief of defense position, while Breuer has been chosen to lead the alliance’s military committee.

The defense ministry announcement therefore maps out a direct change at the top of Germany’s military leadership. Freuding will move from leading the army to serving as the nation’s highest ranking soldier when he assumes the new role in February 2027.

His selection follows an army leadership tenure that began in October 2025 and years of work connected to arms supplies for Kyiv. It also follows his push for technology tested in Ukraine and his initiation of a German army drone regiment.

Pistorius presented Freuding as an officer able to remain composed and act decisively amid major challenges. With Breuer bound for NATO’s top military committee, Freuding is now set to take over Germany’s highest military post.
