The jet was traveling from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas when it began falling at around 32,000 feet per minute at roughly 12:40 p.m. Sunday. It then exploded in a huge fireball near a trailer park in Palm Springs, Florida.
Photos obtained by WPBF 25 News show what appears to be aircraft metal lying on the kitchen floor of local resident Ana Escobar’s home. Her house is less than a mile from the crash site.
Escobar told WPBF 25 News that the debris plummeted through her roof before landing in the kitchen. She said the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office collected the material Tuesday as evidence.
Investigators said Tuesday that important parts of the aircraft broke off before the plane struck the ground. Those pieces were discovered at distances ranging from around 1.3 to 3.8 miles from the crash site.
Peter DiMaira said he found what appeared to be parts of the plane’s tail near his workplace, located 3.8 miles from the crash. DiMaira said he contacted the sheriff’s office about the discovery.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesperson Thomas B. Chapman addressed the evidence during a Tuesday press conference. He said the plane’s left elevator, a tail component used to move the aircraft up and down, was found in three pieces.
“It tells us that at least some components, some pieces of the aircraft, important pieces of the aircraft separated before the impact,” Chapman said.
“What that means exactly in terms of what caused the aircraft to lose control, or whether the loss of this piece was a result of the forces on the aircraft, we don’t know yet. It’s going to take some more analysis.”
Chapman said the distances at which the elevator pieces were found showed that they had separated before the plane crashed. The evidence indicated that the components were not simply scattered when the aircraft hit the ground.
“The function of the elevator is to control pitch up and down,” Chapman said. “At those speeds, I don’t know if it would be effective even if it had still been attached to the aircraft.”
“But knowing that it was lost is a very important piece of evidence in terms of pointing us toward other things to investigate,” Chapman added.

The stormy weather that affected Florida on Sunday “remains a key focus of the investigation,” Chapman confirmed. Officials had not yet determined exactly what caused the aircraft to lose control.
The crash killed a young Texas family of four, their two friends and their nanny. A seasoned pilot and a copilot who was 20 and had obtained her pilot’s license while still in high school also died.
Multimillionaire tech founder Adam Robinson, 44, was aboard with his wife, Helen Sharp, and their children, Emma, 4, and Charlie, 2. Robinson’s brother confirmed Monday that the family members were among the victims.
Their friends Rachael Reed and Charmi Fehr also died in the crash. The family’s nanny, Anita Maria Apellido Cetina, was also killed.
The pilot in command, Jeff Gregory, 55, appeared to recite the Lord’s Prayer during an Air Traffic Control radio transmission in the final seconds before the chartered Learjet 60 plunged into the ground. The aircraft was valued at $2 million.
Copilot Nathalia Filgueiras, 20, could be heard screaming as she communicated the plane’s dire situation in the final radio traffic before impact. Investigators continue examining the separated elevator pieces and the role Sunday’s stormy weather may have played.
