WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- Steven Hilton’s latest AI-generated campaign ad contrasts a prosperous California under Hilton with a dystopian state under Xavier Becerra.
- The spot blames a hypothetical Becerra administration for soaring gasoline prices, struggling businesses, and worsening conditions on Skid Row.
- Hilton proposes canceling California’s high-speed railway and turning it into the Government Failures National Monument.
- Hilton’s creative campaign message could resonate with Californians seeking a different direction.
Republicans running for election or reelection could learn something from California Republican gubernatorial nominee Steven Hilton. His team has produced a series of creative AI-generated campaign ads, and the latest spot may be its sharpest effort yet.
The new ad appeared Sunday on Mr. Hilton’s official X account. It presents a clean, prosperous California two years in the future before rewinding to depict a frozen, dystopian state under Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra.
The contrast is anything but subtle. Hilton’s version of California is sunny and thriving, while the imagined Becerra administration brings soaring gasoline prices, struggling businesses, and worsening conditions on Skid Row.
The centerpiece is Hilton’s proposed answer to California’s high-speed rail project. The Republican candidate wants to shut it down and, in the ad’s words, “cancel High Speed Rail, turn it into the Government Failures National Monument.”
That is the kind of campaign message voters can understand without a lecture, a committee hearing, or another stack of government promises. Hilton’s team takes a large public project and turns it into a symbol of official failure.
The advertisement offers a stark choice based on who occupies the governor’s office. One path features Hilton and a sparkling future, while the other places Becerra over a bleak California burdened by higher costs and deteriorating conditions.
The brighter scenario may be ambitious for just two years under a Hilton administration. Even a Governor Hilton would still have to contend with the California state legislature while trying to deliver his proposed turnaround.
The darker scenario, however, is presented as far less difficult to imagine. Californians are already leaving, while the state’s gasoline prices and taxes are already the highest in the nation.
Skid Row also provides the ad with one of its grimmest images. The obvious question is how conditions there could become worse.

Hilton’s monument idea also invites a broader inventory of California failures. The Pacific Palisades fire is one possible candidate for recognition under the same brutally mocking theme.
The Santa Ynez Reservoir is another suggested site. At the time of the Palisades fire, it could have been described more accurately as the Santa Ynez Dust Bowl.
California gasoline stations could also join the proposed monument system. Every price display and every pump could carry a Government Failures placard featuring Gavin Newsom’s carefully styled image.

The point lands because the signs of failure would be difficult for drivers to miss. A monument at the gasoline pump would put the state government’s record directly in front of Californians every time they stop to fill their tanks.
Hilton may not qualify as a mainstream Republican, but he may be a Republican capable of winning in California. Even if the ad’s gleaming future proves only half right, it would still stand well above Newsom’s performance.
The campaign’s message ultimately asks Californians whether conditions are already bad enough to justify something different. Hilton’s advertisement packages that question with humor, visual contrast, and a proposal designed to make government failure impossible to ignore.
