Rep. Anna Paulina Luna of Florida is calling for members of Congress to disclose whether they claim dual citizenship, arguing that Americans deserve to know if their elected representatives maintain citizenship in another country, as reported by Breitbart.

Luna raised the issue Monday during an appearance on Fox News Channel’s “The Will Cain Show.”

Her comments came as she reacted to an earlier raid on the residence of Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota.

Host Will Cain opened the discussion by asking Luna for her response to the reported action involving Omar.

“Let’s start with your colleague, Congresswoman Ilhan Omar,” Cain said. “What do you make of this raid this morning on Ilhan Omar’s residence in D.C.?”

Luna responded that members of Congress appear to have operated under different expectations for years. She also said any allegations, if true, should be handled through the legal system.

“Look, members of Congress, it seems like, for a long time have been held to a different standard. And if these allegations are true, then it needs to be dealt with legally,” Luna said.

She then shifted the conversation toward disclosure rules for lawmakers. Luna named Kat Cammack and Randy Fine as members who have joined her in pushing for the public to know whether members of Congress hold dual citizenship.

“But, ultimately, well, this is exactly why myself, members like Kat Cammack, even Randy Fine have pushed for there to be a disclosure, at least for people to know whether or not members of Congress are dual citizens. We see that El-Sayed in Michigan is currently apparently a citizen of Egypt as well.”

Luna argued that the citizenship question carries potential national security consequences inside the House of Representatives. She also connected the broader disclosure debate to FARA.

“And that’s something that I don’t think many Americans realize is a very big national security threat in the House of Representatives. But this also gets into bigger conversation on disclosures in general specifically pertaining to FARA.”

Cain noted that the discussion surrounding El-Sayed’s citizenship did not appear settled. He nevertheless agreed with Luna’s central point that the public should receive clear information about lawmakers who may possess another citizenship.

“Yes, I have seen the back-and-forth on this. Seems like it’s not quite 100% confirmed, unless you know some information that I do not about El-Sayed, but that’s been an open conversation.”

Cain then pressed the larger issue of dual citizenship among elected officials. “Does he have dual citizenship? And it brings up, I think, the larger question.”

“Yes, to your point, Congresswoman, we should know. And there’s a reason that we should know, because dual citizenship suggests divided loyalties,” Cain said.

Cain concluded his line of questioning by asking why elected politicians should possess dual citizenship. Luna answered by saying loyalty should rest only with the United States, particularly if the country were faced with a wartime situation.

“Well, 100%. You can’t be expected to have — God forbid there’s a wartime situation,” Luna said.

“Where does your loyalty lie? It should only lie to the United States,” she continued.

Turning back to El-Sayed, Luna said she had seen and shared a clip on social media in which he said he had Egyptian citizenship. She also pointed to the access elected officials can receive to top secret information.

“And what I would say is, with El-Sayed specifically, I think he’s out on stage. I actually saw the clip.”

“I reposted it on my social media saying that he had Egyptian citizenship. So, I mean, look, that’s one thing that I will tell you, when you’re given access to top secret information — we know that there’s also been issue with his candidacy and him specifically wanting to condemn the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Luna characterized the concerns as real threats rather than an abstract political disagreement. She also said the issue extends beyond any single person and includes espionage concerns involving China.

“These are very real threats here,” Luna said.

“But it’s not just him, it’s also to issues of espionage specifically pertaining to China, etc.,” she added. “So, my opinion, only American citizens should be able to hold elected office.”
