Marvel movie star Mark Ruffalo is crashing the Democrats’ midterm celebration by promoting a petition that urges House Democrats to reject House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York as the next Speaker of the House, as reported by Breitbart.

The effort comes after Democrats overturned the House majority in a blue wave during the Nov. 3 midterms. That result created an opportunity for the party to select the chamber’s next Speaker when the newly elected House convenes.

Ruffalo, known for his work in Disney’s Avengers films, is using his public profile to promote the campaign against Jeffries. The petition seeks to remove the Democratic leader from consideration before House members make their choice.

Jeffries, who was born in Brooklyn, New York, has long supported Israel and its right to exist as a democratic Jewish state. His position has remained firm throughout Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas terrorists in Gaza and beyond.

The House Democratic leader has also supported U.S. military aid for Israel. He has described his commitment to the country’s security as “ironclad and unbreakable,” even as that position has drawn abuse from the political left.

The petition promoted by Ruffalo frames Jeffries as a representative of the Democratic establishment rather than the voters who support the party. Its wording directly challenges whether he should receive another nomination for Speaker.

“Hakeem Jeffries currently serves as House Democratic Leader and has previously been nominated by House Democrats for Speaker. If his name is put forward again, House members will have a choice to make.”

The petition then delivers its rejection in blunt terms: “Hakeem Jeffries is simply not the right choice.” That declaration places Ruffalo behind an organized effort to deny the party’s current House leader one of the most powerful positions in Congress.

“We believe the Speaker should represent the Democratic voters, not just the Democratic establishment,” the petition continues. The statement presents the coming decision as a choice between the preferences of Democratic voters and the party structure represented by Jeffries.

The petition acknowledges that House members, rather than outside supporters or celebrity activists, will ultimately determine who holds the position. That vote is expected to take place in January 2027, following the election of the new House.

It explains that “[…] members of the newly elected U.S. House of Representatives will choose who serves as Speaker of the House, one of the most powerful leadership positions in Congress.” Ruffalo’s promotion is therefore designed to pressure those incoming members before that selection occurs.

The campaign also follows Ruffalo’s recent surprise appearance during Macklemore’s concert billed as “Free Palestine.” The actor appeared weeks after Macklemore was dropped as an opener from the Ed Sheeran tour for accusing Israel of committing genocide.

Ruffalo appeared on screen while the stage was being reset and several prerecorded messages from celebrities were shown. His remarks encouraged the audience to continue supporting the Palestinian cause and connected that campaign to equality and peace.

“Keep fighting for a free Palestine and humanity all over the world and amongst the people. There will be no peace until there’s equality,” Mark Ruffalo pleaded. His message continued: “Lots of love, have a good show. Keep fighting the good fight.”

That appearance and Ruffalo’s promotion of the petition place the Avengers star squarely inside a Democratic leadership dispute centered on Jeffries. The petition does not merely criticize a specific policy position, but instead calls on House Democrats to deny him the Speaker’s chair.

Jeffries has previously been nominated for Speaker by House Democrats, making the petition’s target explicit rather than hypothetical. If his name is submitted again, members will face the choice described by the campaign when the House selects its leadership.

For Ruffalo, the petition marks another public intervention connected to Israel and the Palestinian cause. This time, however, his message is aimed directly at Democratic lawmakers as they prepare to decide who will lead the House.
