A resurfaced 2024 post by Somaliland politician Ali Hassan Mohamed is adding pressure to Minnesota Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar amid a string of recent controversies. The post accuses Omar of leaking information to Somali leaders in December 2022, an allegation now receiving fresh attention online.
The claim returned to public view after a flurry of posts shared Sunday circulated Mohamed’s original message. As the accusation spread, the resurfaced post went viral on X and renewed questions about Omar’s contacts with officials in Somalia.
This is not the first time that Ilhan Omar created animosity between Somalis. She was heavily involved in the conflict that took place in Las-anod. In December 2022, she visited Garowe, where she leaked information to some of the Somali leaders pertaining a meeting between the President of Somaliland and the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Congress, which she was a member by that time. She was very persistent and urged the Somalian leaders to take proactive actions against Somaliland as soon as possible. A month after this, the Las-anod conflict broke out. She was certainly one of the main characters who created hatred and division among Somalis. So it is time for Ilhan to be held accountable for her wrongdoings.

Omar was already facing intense scrutiny following an Oct. 12 raid at her Washington, D.C., home by the Department of Homeland Security. The raid was conducted in connection with reported allegations of immigration fraud.

Mohamed served as an official in the Republic of Somaliland, an autonomous region and self-declared independent state in northwestern Somalia. Somaliland separated from Somalia and remains firmly opposed to the African nation’s federal government.
That political divide is significant when considering the allegation against Omar. Somaliland and representatives such as Mohamed have an interest in seeing Somalia and politicians viewed as friendly toward Somalia face scrutiny and backlash on the world stage.

The circumstances therefore call for care when weighing Mohamed’s charge. At the same time, there currently appears to be no consequential evidence disproving his claim that Omar leaked information to Somali leaders.
Several established facts provide context for the resurfaced accusation. Omar visited Somalia in December 2022, the same month cited in Mohamed’s claim, according to a report from the federally funded international outlet Voice of America.
During that trip, the Minnesota Democrat met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. She also met with other members of Somalia’s Cabinet and parliament.
Those meetings do not by themselves establish Mohamed’s allegation. They do, however, confirm that Omar was in Somalia and meeting with the country’s senior political leadership during the period identified in his post.
Previous public comments from Omar have also drawn attention to her willingness to use her position in Congress to advocate for Somalia and its people. Those remarks came during a January 2024 appearance in Minneapolis.
According to USA Today, Omar addressed Somalis about a recent election that had taken place in Somalia. She delivered the Minneapolis remarks in Somali, with a translation later providing the substance of her comments.
“We should have this confidence in ourselves as Somalis. We live in this country. We are taxpayers in this country. This country is one where one of your daughters sits in Congress. While I am in Congress, no one will take Somalia’s sea. The United States will not back others to rob us,” Omar said, according to the translation.

The statement placed her congressional role directly within a message about protecting Somalia’s interests. Her language about what would happen while she remained in Congress has now taken on renewed significance as Mohamed’s older accusation circulates again.
The resurfaced post does not, based on the available material, identify the specific information Omar allegedly leaked. It also does not provide details about how the information was supposedly transmitted or which Somali leaders allegedly received it.
Still, the timing cited by Mohamed overlaps with Omar’s documented December 2022 visit and meetings with Somalia’s president, prime minister, Cabinet members, and parliamentarians. That overlap is among the facts now fueling scrutiny as the accusation spreads.
Fun Fact: Ilhan Omar's father was a senior ranking Somali Military official - Colonel Nur Omar Mohamed.

Mohamed’s position as a Somaliland official gives him an unmistakable political interest in challenging Somalia and figures associated with it. Yet the viral revival of his post, combined with Omar’s documented travel and her later remarks in Minneapolis, has ensured the allegation will not quietly disappear.
