WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
  • A British marriage certificate reportedly identifies the father of a woman believed to be Ilhan Omar’s sister as Nur Said Elmi.
  • The certificate describes the father as a Somali military officer, reviving questions about Omar’s family and asylum history.
  • The Elmi surname matches Omar’s former husband, but the certificate does not prove he is her brother.
  • Omar denied knowingly being related to her former husband, while President Trump called for her resignation if she used a fake name.

Rep. Ilhan Omar is facing renewed questions about her family history after the New York Post published a British marriage certificate that reportedly identifies the name of her father as “Nur Said Elmi.” The document has revived an immigration controversy already surrounding the Minnesota Democrat.

According to the Post, the 1997 certificate belongs to Leila Nur Said Elmi, a woman believed to be Omar’s sister. It identifies her father as “Nur Said Elmi” and lists his occupation as “military officer.”

That occupation could become significant because Omar has described herself as a “child refugee.” It was previously reported that her father’s time in the Somali military could bear on the legal conditions surrounding the congresswoman’s asylum history.

Omar’s father has been publicly identified as Nur Omar Mohamed. He has also been identified as a colonel in the Somali military under dictator Siad Barre, whose regime carried out a brutal campaign against the Isaaq population during the 1980s.

A detailed report from Somaliland Chronicle raised questions about Mohamed’s possible involvement in those atrocities. The publication argued that his rank, years of service, and place within the military command structure made it highly unlikely that he was unaware of the campaign against the Isaaq.

The Somaliland Chronicle report also disputed portrayals of Omar’s father as little more than a teacher trainer. It argued that his military duties and proximity to the Barre regime should receive substantially more scrutiny.

The New York Post reported that other evidence supports the contention that Omar’s father was known by the Elmi surname. That evidence reportedly includes social media records and condolences posted after his death in 2020.

The surname presents another uncomfortable wrinkle. If Nur Omar Mohamed also used the name Nur Said Elmi, that surname matches Omar’s former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, whom she legally married in 2009 before their divorce was finalized in 2017.

The certificate, however, is not definitive proof that Ahmed Elmi is Omar’s brother. The document also had surfaced in previous reporting, while DNA samples could provide additional evidence concerning the disputed family relationship.

Questions also have emerged about the legal name Omar used when she sought federal office. RedState previously reported that a recent federal court filing identified the congresswoman as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.”

The New York Post revisited other unusual details involving Omar’s marriage history. Omar married Ahmed Elmi in 2009 and has said the pair separated in 2011, although their divorce did not become final until 2017.

During that period, Omar had a third child with Ahmed Hirsi, who is the father of her other two children. The Star Tribune previously reported that Omar and Hirsi filed joint tax returns in 2014 and 2015 while she was still legally married to Elmi.

Those tax filings were later corrected. Omar has also repeatedly denied allegations that she fraudulently married a relative, but her answer when directly asked whether she was related to her former husband did little to quiet the controversy.

During an interview, MS NOW’s Chris Hayes asked Omar whether she and Elmi were related. Omar responded, “Not to my knowledge.”

President Trump mocked that response during a Thursday rally in Iowa. He also called on Omar to resign if she used a “fake name” to run for Congress.

The unresolved issue now centers on whether Omar knowingly misrepresented her identity on immigration papers or other official documents. Such a finding could bring serious consequences, although the published marriage certificate alone does not establish that Ahmed Elmi is her brother.

What the document does provide is another reported connection between the Elmi surname, Omar’s father, and her former husband. With questions about her father’s military history, her legal name, and her marriage timeline all lingering, the mystery is hardly fading away.
