A 34-year-old woman was released without charges after her Chevrolet pickup drove onto a Kansas soccer field, killing 6-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Wichita police said the investigation remains active as authorities seek to determine what caused the deadly crash, as reported by Fox News.
Adrian and Schafer, both of McPherson, Kansas, were not related. The pickup drove from a parking space onto a field at Stryker Sports Complex at about 3:25 p.m. Saturday, police said.
Five children were among the 10 people injured in the crash. An additional 61-year-old woman was hospitalized for medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries, bringing the total number transported to hospitals to 11.
The woman who was behind the wheel of a truck that drove onto a soccer field and killed two has been released without charges as police await toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the truck.

The driver was initially taken into custody, but police announced Sunday that she had been released pending toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the pickup. Two of her children were inside the vehicle when the crash occurred.
Another of the woman’s children was playing soccer on a different field at the complex. Police said the driver had a valid license, had no outstanding arrest warrants, and was cooperating with investigators.
Her release came after investigators interviewed more than 30 witnesses, including the children who were inside the pickup. Police also consulted with the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office before releasing her.
Investigators have not determined what caused the pickup to drive onto the field. Authorities have not confirmed whether the crash was intentional or whether a medical emergency, impairment or another factor was involved.
The district attorney’s office told Fox News Digital that police were expected to make an initial case presentation to District Attorney Marc Bennett early in the week. The office said further information would follow that review.
“Following that initial case review, our office will share information as appropriate,” the district attorney’s office said.
Emergency crews rushed to the sports complex in northeast Wichita, where bystanders had already stepped forward to assist the injured. Adrian and Schafer died on the field despite efforts to save their lives.
Ten people were transported to Ascension Via Christi and Wesley Medical Center with injuries that police described Sunday as noncritical. The five injured children were a 5-year-old girl, a 5-year-old boy, two 8-year-old boys, and a 9-year-old girl.
The five injured adults ranged from 28 to 68 years old. Police separately counted the 61-year-old woman who experienced medical complications unrelated to traumatic injuries.
Sporting Wichita Academy said the deaths and injuries had shaken a soccer community centered on families and teammates. The academy thanked the first responders, medical workers, and bystanders who helped after the crash.
“Today, that community is hurting, and we must lean on one another more than ever,” the academy wrote on Facebook.
Meddys pledged to donate 20% of all revenue from its Wichita and Salina locations from Oct. 18 through Oct. 24 to families affected by the tragedy. The restaurant also offered free meals to immediate family members of injured people while their loved ones remain hospitalized.
“With so much to carry right now, figuring out your next meal should not have to be one more worry,” Meddys wrote on Facebook.
The restaurant partnered with local nonprofit Kingdom Athletics Mission to receive and distribute donations to affected McPherson families. Meddys said the nonprofit would manage both GoFundMe donations and the business’ contributions.
Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan offered condolences Sunday to the families, injured people and witnesses. He said the day should have been spent watching children play soccer and families enjoy time together, but instead ended in tragedy.
“We know this tragedy has affected many people throughout our community, and we want those families to know they are not alone,” Sullivan said.
The crash also halted the Kansas State High School Activities Association’s inaugural girls flag football state championship on an adjacent field. The association suspended play and said the games would not resume that weekend.

Wichita Police Capt. Aaron Moses said at Saturday’s news conference that the driver was cooperating with investigators. Sullivan said police knew what occurred but were still working to determine why it happened.
“We know what happened, but now we’re working very hard to find out why it happened,” Sullivan said Saturday.
