True Food Kitchen had celebrity backing, a menu built around wellness, and more than $100 million from investors. None of it prevented the Phoenix restaurant chain from filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection while carrying approximately $42.1 million in debt, as reported by The Daily Mail.

The company has permanently closed 12 restaurants, cutting roughly a quarter of its previous footprint. Locations in California, Miami, Chicago, New Orleans, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Virginia were among those affected.

True Food Kitchen says its 34 remaining restaurants will continue operating while it restructures. Chief executive Jeff Chandler described bankruptcy as the best route for simplifying the company and concentrating on its “craveable, health-forward food” and hospitality.

The chain is pursuing a court-supervised sale and searching for either a long-term buyer or a financial partner. HumanCo has committed $20 million in debtor-in-possession financing, which is intended to keep the company operating during the bankruptcy process.

Court filings place True Food Kitchen’s debt at approximately $42.1 million. The company blamed its financial troubles on management turnover, strategic missteps, expansion decisions, and other challenges.

The filing marks a dramatic reversal for a business that once attracted major investors and celebrity attention. Restaurateur Sam Fox and Dr Andrew Weil founded True Food Kitchen in Phoenix in 2008, building the concept around Weil’s anti-inflammatory food philosophy.

The company sought to make wellness-focused dining feel more inviting than a strictly restrictive meal. Its menu has featured salads, grain bowls, burgers, pizzas, sandwiches, and seasonal entrees, along with juices, smoothies, and cocktails.

Popular dishes have included the Ancient Grain Bowl, Teriyaki Quinoa Bowl and Organic Tuscan Kale Salad. Even the burger selection reflects the company’s health-conscious approach, offering grass-fed beef and a vegan option made with mushrooms, beets, and walnuts.

Oprah Winfrey became the biggest celebrity name connected to the chain when she invested in 2018 and joined its board. At the time, Winfrey said she was impressed by the food and the company’s approach to healthy eating after visiting one of its restaurants.

Winfrey’s reported favorite order was the Organic Tuscan Kale Salad paired with a Thai grapefruit martini. Former Starbucks chief executive Howard Schultz has also been an investor, while Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas participated in a later funding round.

In 2022, True Food Kitchen raised more than $100 million in an investment round led by HumanCo and Manna Tree. The company then had 42 restaurants and was pursuing additional growth, including plans for smaller format locations.

Four years later, the chain is reducing its restaurant portfolio and seeking protection from creditors. It has not disclosed the profitability of individual restaurants, but its bankruptcy filing points to costs, management changes, and investments that failed to deliver as expected.

True Food Kitchen’s financial strain also comes as restaurants contend with rising food, labor, and occupancy costs. Those pressures have made it harder for chains to keep menu prices attractive while preserving their margins.

Some customers had already questioned whether the company’s healthy menu justified its prices. On Reddit, one Boulder diner criticized the food as bland and the prices as excessive, while a customer who visited a Houston restaurant called it “pretty good.”

Other Boulder diners complained about noise and disappointing visits to the new location. Another customer praised the food but found the prices underwhelming, while one enthusiastic fan exclaimed: “Damn, this place was good!”

For now, the remaining 34 restaurants are still serving customers as True Food Kitchen works through bankruptcy. The company’s immediate challenge is finding a buyer or financial partner capable of giving the celebrity-backed wellness chain another chance.
