Jon Stewart blasted Democrats considering another impeachment of President Trump if they regain control of Congress, dismissing the prospect as political theater rather than meaningful accountability, as reported by The New York Post.

The comedian argued that lawmakers should instead direct their attention toward problems he believes are more urgent.

Stewart addressed the subject while answering questions from fans at the end of Wednesday’s episode of his podcast, “The Weekly Show with Jon Stewart.”

One listener asked whether pursuing impeachment would amount to a “strategic mistake” for Democrats.

“We’ve already shown there’s no accountability,” Stewart said.

The comedian, who regularly brings an intensely serious approach to politics, showed little patience for the idea that another congressional proceeding would deliver different results.

Stewart described the country as being in a state of “triage.” He said Democrats who obtain positions of power should concentrate on more pressing matters, including “rebalancing” the economy and addressing tensions within the labor market.

“That’s where all their efforts should be,” he said. “I don’t want to see a f–king five-act performative play of House hearings. I just don’t want to see it.”

Stewart continued by rejecting what he characterized as an empty display of consequences. “I don’t want to see everybody having the opportunity to pantomime accountability, ‘cuz you know they’re actually not going to bring it.”

The comedian, who regularly hosts “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central, pointed to Congress’ handling of the Jan. 6, 2021 attacks on the Capitol.

He argued lawmakers failed to hold Trump accountable over that episode and noted that Trump has already been impeached twice without any real impact.

“If you couldn’t bring accountability to Jan. 6 in two years, what confidence do any of us have that you’re going to be able to untangle Eric and Don’s drone company?” Stewart said.

He also suggested that people with substantial power and privilege are capable of outlasting congressional scrutiny.

“There is not a person of that power and privilege who can’t figure out how to run out the clock on a two-year investigation.”

Trump was impeached twice during his first term, first in 2019 and again in 2021. Stewart invoked those previous proceedings while arguing that Democrats would be making a serious mistake by prioritizing another impeachment if they gain seats in the November midterm elections.

Returning to his medical triage comparison, Stewart said other problems should receive immediate attention. In his view, another impeachment fight would amount to treating a comparatively less urgent problem while more damaging issues remain unresolved.

“On the triage list of what’s wrong in this country, it is, ‘I’m sorry sir, you’re going to have to stay in the waiting room, ‘cuz this guy just got shot, and it sounds to me like you just have a sore throat.’ Like, do the s–t that actually is killing people right now,” he said.

Trump addressed the impeachment threats Wednesday and asserted that Democrats have no reason to impeach him. He also said he had demonstrated restraint by not targeting former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden or former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

“I could have done very bad things to Hillary Clinton, I could have done very, very bad things to Joe Biden, I could have done very bad things to Barack Hussein Obama,” Trump said in the Oval Office.

His remarks came while answering Fox News’ Peter Doocy, who asked whether he was concerned about impeachment threats.

“I thought it was inappropriate to do so because you have to treat the office of the presidency with respect,” Trump continued.

“Then I found out that they impeached me twice. I certainly – even to this moment I can do whatever I want, if I want.”

Trump then emphasized his view of the office and how it should be handled.

“But I view the presidency as a very sacred position. Very sacred position. Very important, very sacred, a position where it has to be treated properly.”
