For more than a year, Barack and Michelle Obama have faced persistent rumors that they are heading for divorce.

The speculation has included claims that the former president and former First Lady have been living “separate lives” for quite some time.

On Saturday, the Obamas answered that chatter with affectionate social media posts marking their 34th wedding anniversary.

Their public celebration arrived while the divorce rumors continued to circulate.

“Happy anniversary, @MichelleObama! I’m still the luckiest guy in the world to be with you,” Barack wrote on Instagram. The 65 year old shared the message alongside a photograph showing him gazing at Michelle.

Michelle, 62, posted her own anniversary tribute on Instagram, sharing a video montage of the couple through the years. Her caption presented an equally glowing picture of their marriage.

“Loving you just keeps getting better and better!” Michelle wrote. “Happy anniversary, @BarackObama. Here’s to many, many more years of joy , laughter, and memories to come. ”

The loving posts did little to erase the speculation that has surrounded the couple for over a year. Questions about their marriage escalated sharply in January of last year after Michelle missed two major public events.

Michelle did not attend the funeral of Jimmy Carter or the inauguration of Donald Trump.

She was the only living former First Lady to miss both events, leaving Barack to attend each one alone.

Political commentator Meghan McCain addressed the rumors during a 2025 appearance on reporter Tara Palmeri’s podcast.

McCain said the claims were coming from people she considered credible.

“I have been hearing this rumor that the Obamas are getting a divorce by reputable people,” McCain said.

“I’m not talking about TMZ, I’m not talking about Perez Hilton, although I love him, he’s my friend .”

McCain continued, “I’m talking about like very serious journalists telling me that they’re hearing that the Obama divorce rumors are true.” Palmeri, who has long covered Washington politics, said she had also heard similar claims.

“We’ve heard that for a long time,” Palmeri replied. “Like I just heard that they live separate lives.”

The scrutiny continued after Michelle launched her IMO podcast in March of last year. Her comments about Barack and frequent complaints are mainly what has exposed tensions within their relationship.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson claimed that Michelle “really dislikes her husband, and it’s super obvious.” He argued that her attitude toward Barack appeared openly hostile.

“I’m not just saying that to be catty,” Carlson explained. “I think I’m trying to feel compassion for her but her hostility toward the guy is unbelievable.”

Fellow former Fox News host Megyn Kelly agreed, saying that “everything Michelle says about her husband is negative.” Kelly then compared Michelle’s remarks with how she discusses her own husband, Doug Brunt.

“I almost never say negative things about Doug,” Kelly added. “He’s not perfect but when I think about him, I don’t immediately go to whatever is negative. I go to what’s positive and what I love about him.”

Barack appeared on Michelle’s IMO podcast in July of last year, where the couple directly confronted the escalating divorce speculation. Michelle claimed that leaving her husband had never crossed her mind.

“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I thought about quitting my man,” Michelle said. “And we’ve had some really hard times. So we had a lot of fun times, a lot of adventures, and I have become a better person because of the man I’m married to.”

Barack said he had been largely unaware of the rumors until other people mentioned them to him. Despite those denials and the couple’s affectionate anniversary messages, the speculation has not disappeared.

Many remain unconvinced by the Obamas’ insistence that their marriage is still strong.

For now, their 34th anniversary celebration stands beside a rumor cycle that continues to follow them.
