A Democratic Socialist Florida Senate candidate claimed that efforts to stop woke policies amount to targeting Black people, turning a political slogan into an accusation of racial hostility, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Nixon, a Jacksonville state representative, is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

The remarks appeared in a resurfaced video in which Nixon addressed DeSantis and his repeated use of the phrase about Florida being where woke goes to die.

Nixon treated the slogan as if it were directed at Black Floridians rather than a collection of policies.

“We know that you just want to remove woke and replace it with black people,” Nixon said during the video. She then tied that accusation to unspecified events that she said had occurred on a Saturday.

“And look, if Florida is where woke or black people go to die, that’s evident by what just took place on Saturday,” Nixon said.

Her remarks directly equated DeSantis opposing woke politics with an attack on Black people.

DeSantis has used the line that Florida is where woke goes to die while promoting a package of education and workplace bills.

Those measures limited classroom instruction involving race and gender, restricted diversity training, and removed some books described by the source as inappropriate from libraries.

Nixon framed those policies in much darker terms. Rather than treating the slogan as criticism of a political and cultural ideology, she presented it as a stand in for Black Floridians.

The candidate also accused DeSantis of trying to keep people unaware or politically inactive. Nixon said DeSantis “had this attack on woke, this stop woke, because he wants people sleeping.”

Her argument then moved from education and workplace policies to demonstrations in the streets. Nixon accused DeSantis of trying to ban mass protests and described legislation involving protesters who block roads.

She accused him of “trying to make it so that people could run folks over in the street if they blocked the street while they were protesting.”

Nixon also described political power as a source of fear for those she was criticizing.

She suggested that marginalized people gaining power would alarm their opponents because of how those groups have historically been treated.

“And if we come into power, they are fearful,” Nixon said.

“They’re fearful that if this group comes into power, all these marginalized people, that they’re going to do to what they’ve done to many of us for hundreds of years.”

The candidate showed little interest in the usual calls for cooperation between political parties. Nixon dismissed the idea of working across the aisle and instead accused her political opponents of trying to kill people like her.

“They’re not trying to work across the aisle. They’re literally trying to kill us, and they are doing it on camera,” Nixon claimed.

The source challenged that rhetoric by pointing to recent high-profile assassinations and assassination attempts against conservatives.

Nixon’s political record also includes an August primary victory over Alexander Vindman.

The source identifies her as a Jacksonville state representative as well as a Florida Senate candidate and Democratic Socialists of America member.

Her comments following the killing of Charlie Kirk also drew attention.

According to a Daily Wire report cited by the source, Nixon wrote that anyone supporting a remembrance resolution for Kirk was “a tool of white supremacy.”

Nixon carried that rhetoric onto the House floor while discussing legislation connected to Kirk. She compared a Kirk Day bill to something “brought straight by the KKK.”

The resurfaced video and her comments about Kirk show the candidate repeatedly casting political disputes in explicitly racial and life-threatening terms.

Her attack on the phrase about woke politics placed Black people at the center of a slogan DeSantis used for legislation involving education, workplace diversity training, and library books.
