A peaceful backyard scene on Long Island erupted into chaos when a wandering deer caught its antlers in a hammock.

Video captured the distressed animal flailing against the netting before an experienced rescuer carefully cut it free.

Frank Floridia, president of the nonprofit Strong Island Animal Rescue League, responded after the homeowner called for assistance Friday.

The rescue took place at a home in Lake Grove, where the buck had become dangerously tangled.

Floridia arrived wearing an antler-proof vest and approached the trapped deer with scissors.

The video shows him cutting through the hammock netting while attempting to keep the animal and himself out of further danger.

As Floridia worked, the deer gradually began to settle down.

Each careful cut loosened more of the material that had wrapped around its antlers and turned an ordinary piece of backyard equipment into a makeshift trap.

The dramatic struggle ended when the deer was finally freed from the hammock.

Once released, the animal quickly hightailed it away from the Lake Grove property, bringing the tense rescue to a successful close.

The incident was not an isolated case for Floridia.

During this month alone, he has rescued five deer on Long Island after the animals became caught in makeshift traps around residential properties.

Floridia urged homeowners to remove outdoor equipment when it is not being used.

Hammocks and common athletic nets can become serious hazards when bucks wander into backyards and snag their antlers in loose netting.

“Homeowners should take caution that due to all the construction going on that deer are more frequently ending up in backyards,” he said.

The warning focuses on equipment that residents may not consider dangerous when it is sitting unused.

For a male deer with antlers, however, exposed netting can rapidly become a dangerous restraint.

“Hammocks and athletic equipment such as volleyball, soccer and lacrosse nets are a great danger to bucks and male deer that will most likely get their antlers tangled in them.”

Floridia’s experience and training played a central role in the Lake Grove rescue.

Even with a licensed animal rescuer handling the situation, freeing a panicked deer remains precarious for everyone involved.

A trapped deer can become highly stressed while struggling against whatever has caught its antlers.

The animal’s movements also expose the person attempting the rescue to the possibility of being trampled or struck by the antlers.

“The rescues are extremely dangerous to both the deer and the rescuer as the deer can get stressed and have a heart attack, and the rescuer can get trampled and/or impaled by the antlers.”

The video shows why Floridia approached the animal with protective gear and worked methodically through the netting.

The deer’s eventual calm allowed him to finish cutting the hammock and clear the antlers without the encounter ending in catastrophe.

For Long Island homeowners, Floridia’s message is straightforward: equipment such as hammocks and sports nets should be taken down when it is not in use.

Leaving it exposed can create another backyard emergency for a wandering buck and another dangerous assignment for rescuers.
