Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman is once again at the center of speculation about his political future after appearing in a video shown at the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, as reported by The Gateway Pundit.

Fetterman has repeatedly said that he does not intend to leave the Democratic Party. His appearance before a Republican audience, however, has renewed questions about whether that position could eventually change.

The senator’s video was shown during the Republican midterm convention on Wednesday, Sept. 9. In the recorded message, Fetterman introduced Republican Sen. Dave McCormick of Pennsylvania and described himself as a “common sense Democrat.”

“A big room of Republicans in Dallas. Yes. I’m Senator John Fetterman, Pennsylvania. Yes, I’m a Democrat. Why am I here talking to you today? Because, well, I’m a common-sense Democrat. I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life,” Fetterman said.

The appearance was notable because Fetterman remains a Democratic senator while speaking to attendees at a major Republican gathering.

His recent criticism of socialism and portions of the Democratic Party’s left wing has contributed to speculation about whether he could eventually change parties.

Fetterman’s message also emphasized his willingness to work with McCormick and President Donald Trump on issues affecting Pennsylvania’s steel industry.

“I’m a lifelong Democrat who votes overwhelmingly with my party — and should the Senate flip in November, I will still be the 51st vote that I ran on,” Fetterman later said in a statement, according to reporting on his appearance.

That statement was intended to make his current position clear: Fetterman says he remains a Democrat and would continue serving as a Democratic senator even if the party regained control of the Senate.

The Republican convention appearance nevertheless drew attention from Democrats, with MSNBC host Jen Psaki discussing the possibility that Fetterman could eventually switch parties.

“John Fetterman, Senator from Pennsylvania, still a Democrat,” Psaki said while discussing the video.

“I mean, his biggest risk right now is he’s going to be primaried, like, Chris Deluzio. Who knows what he’ll do. Others may primary him. I don’t understand why he’s doing that. But to me, it feels like Democrats need to be clear-eyed that he might flip parties. But what do you think?”

Former New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu responded that he was surprised by Fetterman’s decision to appear at the Republican convention.

“I have not seen it. And I’m flabbergasted by it in this sense- that I’m a common-sense Democrat that doesn’t like the extremes either. But I would never do something as stupid as that,” Landrieu said.

Landrieu went on to discuss the political implications of a potential party switch and said Democrats should consider the possibility that Fetterman could leave the party.

“And I am very clear-eyed in the way that we count votes. And whether we are going to win the Senate or not Senate. You got to put him in the questionable category. He has been flirting with, you know, changing or not changing and trying to explain why he does. But a second grader in politics would understand why it would not be wise for a sitting Democratic senator to address a Republican convention unless he was open to the possibility of changing. And I just think that reality being what it was, Democrats have to, like, take all the scales out of their eyes and, you know, be open to the possibility that Senator Fetterman, before it’s over, may decide to switch parties. Now, he swears he won’t. I hope he honors his word.”

Fetterman has continued to identify himself as a Democrat despite his disagreements with some members and factions of his party. His convention appearance did not include an announcement that he was changing parties.

The Pennsylvania senator has also maintained a working relationship with McCormick, who is a Republican.

Their cooperation has become a recurring feature of Fetterman’s political activity and was part of the reason for his appearance in the convention video.

The Republican convention appearance therefore created a striking political image without producing an actual party switch.

Fetterman remains a Democratic senator, while his willingness to address a Republican gathering and criticize socialism has continued to generate questions about where his political path could lead.

For now, the senator’s public position remains unchanged: he says he is a Democrat and intends to remain one.

The speculation surrounding him, however, is likely to continue as his disagreements with portions of the Democratic Party receive additional attention.
